Okay, Ruel, I've installed Inkscape and can't figure out how to cut a circle in half. I looked at the first couple of Heathenx tutes and thought I had it figured out with the >Path >Difference tool (after making a 1000 x 1000 circle and a 1000 x1000 square and centering them on y-axis and 500 apart on x-axis.) But it doesn't seem to do anything. (?) I also looked at the Help >Shapes in Inkscape and the bit about arcs and segments seems not to apply, or it's written with all the clarity of a man page. Any help you can offer - much appreciated.

Create your circle and when it's complete, you'll see two square nodes (top and left) and one round node (right). Move the round node to the left square node. Circle now in half... You can hold the ctrl key to move to preset stops, and you can use the toolbar to choose to turn your path modification into pie slice shaped parts, too.
To do what you're trying to do, which is modify a shape with another shape, you must make sure you select them both, holding down the shift key to do so. Then, Path->Difference. This, and other similar path alterations, is something I use very heavily and you will too.

Kids and neighbours running in and out . . . can't remember the last thing I learned here . . . It's right nice to have a place where it's safe to ask a stupid question!

Either use a hosting service or your own ftp area of your personal home page and link to it between the " " tags, or click on Additional Options at the bottom of your post and upload the pic as an attachment.

Thanks, Ruel! I kept hitting my head on Inkscape's linear gradient wanting to go 'reflective' in the 2nd of two grouped objects. So I saved the shape I had as a .png and opened it with Xara to finish it up. I don't like the way the red cylinders look unevenly spaced, and I don't get why. (The 3 circles at each end were evenly spaced.) But I'll try again later.

If you spaced them in Inkscape, you have to play with the distribution options to get it just right.

Thanks, Ruel! Can you tell me how to stop the linear gradient function (Inkscape) from going 'reflective' in the 2nd of two grouped objects? I'm poking around and I don't find it.

Yup. You got it. I think it's 'reflect - (some suffix)' in the interface - which I haven't figured out how to use to change/configure the issue at hand.
