Who comes up with this stuff? Why are "improvements" always a really bad idea?

I just got Lucid and the new Gimp this afternoon...Whose bright idea was it to fix free select so it keeps right on selecting forever? It's like having my pointer on a fishing line and I can't cut the bloody line.
When I try to copy/paste what i selected does not move to where i want it,the whole page moves rendering it completely useless.

Improvements are never bad, buggy software is.  Smiley

File a bug against it.  Then send Canonical a bill for the raised blood pressure that you experienced when taking the time to freely test their latest Beta release Shocked

LOL!!!!
So,is there a way to find the old Gimp and get it back?
Ok,I tried to create an account.I failed. I'm invalid.
Tried again and got invalid token. And of course there is NO WAY to report the problem cause there is no web master e mail.(Why do websites do this? Are they too cheap to have an Admin to bloody help people?)

That means Gimp is useless, I can't report the problem in Gimp (and the free select problem is not listed so I'm the first one to find it..Oh jolly.)  Roll Eyes Angry

So it just goes downhill form there, as you might suspect. I create a password and user name. 3 guesses what happens.
After several tries at logging in,I get this happy little note:

The token you submitted does not exist, has expired, or has been canceled.

Can't write the web master to complain about free select and their log in problem  cause Yahoo won't accept their e mail address. I tried to fix it,Yahoo was not pleased.
So they have made it impossible for me to do diddly squat. I'm going to see if there is a way I can get an older Gimp from someone at LI over Skype. Just deleted the latest one.

So if someone here is a member of the Bugzilla Gimp team,I'd love it if you would send this to them so that they can know that there are two problems they have they most likely don't know about...If not,no worries.

I think a lot of snobbish people block yahoo.com addresses forgetting that it is used legitimately both by individuals and businesses.

Anyway, you should be able to poke around in the package archives of Ubuntu, download the last version that worked for you and dpkg -i the individual gimp-data, gimp, libgimp, libgimp-dev (for compiling plugins) packages of the version you want.  (They all have version numbers, so it should be easy.)

Here is a link to one of their mirrors and their gimp packages:  http://ftp.bsd.md/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gimp/

After everything is installed just use whichever dpkg front end you use (e.g. synaptic, aptitude, kpackage, or whatever thing Canonical thinks is easier for you) to hold that version of gimp at the version that works.

Could be right on Yahoo. I personally like their e mail and have used it for years.
WOW! What a list! It's overwhelming and I have no idea what version I last had that worked..Any version before the one offered on Gimp's main website would work,I suppose.
I did find an older one elsewhere after my rant, extracted it and of course,it did not install cause I have no idea what I'm doing. If these are like that, they are useless as i just don't understand all the geeky installing stuff from tarballs with Linux.
Ok,just tried, got an error message. This does not look good...I deleted it.

Ok,going with ,Googlemail and all appears ok.  They now should have my rant version 2.0 for their reading enjoyment.

Hi

one good advise, do not use BETA-versions.
Lucid (10.04) will be "stable" 29th of april
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx

I usually wait about 2 month's before laoding the new version.
I need a stable system to work on.

Regards,
Jan

Agree with Jan. I lay low till the dust settles too. I’m definitely not an early adapter.

Lucid is buggy. I was going to install kubuntu lucid but found a bug in the installer, it would let you choose were to install grub. so I didn't  finish the install. From what I'm seeing the last  2 releases are a mess. Need to figure out haoiw to get my tablet to work, it works only as a mouse with  out  the full functions. I'll wait until it's released an\t the end of the month.

If you want long term support I'd give Ubuntu a pass and either go with Debian Squeeze or CentOS 6 when they are released later this year.  Cent is enterprise class and Debian Stable is rock solid.

FWIW - I use gimp 2.6.7 and I don't have this problem, so it is either a packaging issue with Ubuntu or an issue within the newest GTK+ in Lucid.

Ugh.

Much to my surprise, I've become quite fond of Karmic . . . and this in spite of my general objection to the development model employed by Canonical/Ubuntu.  I've recently even started using it as my main system.  Weird.

The cool thing about Ubu' is that you get access to the latest software.  The downside is that all things Ubuntu are "sid", or based thereon.  "Sid" is where (Debian) software lives before it's been properly vetted.  Referring to a distribution of Ubuntu as "Stable" makes as much sense as calling "Sid" (Debian unstable) "stable".

Pause and think about that for a nanosecond.

And yet Canonical does some cool stuff to make SOME unstable software work . . . however they do that.  Roll Eyes

Hi

for all of those that want to use Kubuntu.
Problem is, the Kubuntu-version is not as stable as the Ubuntu-version
so I would advise to install ubuntu (with gnome) and afterwards
load KDE over the repositories.

Yes, I know is slows the machine a little but that is the price for stability.

I had a peek at Suse's last (free) release that does not look too bad and has
KDE as the default desktop. If I didn't need the german language (my wife) I would try
PCLinuxOS, Centos or Fedora they all have great reviews.

Hi all,

I am using Gimp 3.6.6 in ArtistX. I think that I have experienced the problem with the free-select tool and, if I remember rightly, it was when I had not joined the selection up and wanted to back out but didn't seem to be able to. I'm not too sure of what I did, probably used the 'esc' key or clicked on another tool, then 'no selection' or a combination of those!

From the GIMP site : --

Quote
GIMP 2.6.7 Released2009-08-14

GIMP 2.6.7 comes with lots of bug-fixes and it contains an important fix for using GIMP with the latest GEGL and babl releases. Please have a look at the NEWS file for a detailed list of changes.

The source can be downloaded from ftp.gimp.org. Binary packages for the various supported platforms should become available soon; please check the Downloads section.

Download the source code and compile from : --
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.6/

or install the latest stable version from the repositories of your distro.

[Actually the latest stable version is 2.6.8]

It doesn't look encouraging for installing from an alternative a .deb file, lol.

You'll have to edit that ftp link for it to work.  The automagick script that converts any url to a hyperlink in smf slaps an http in front of the ftp.  You get redirected to some "Business Process Modernization" site whatever that means.

http://www.gimp.org/downloads/  <--- Will take you to the gimp.org download site.
