Got this info in a search.

Quote
Gimp still lacks full CMYK color model support. The ability to separate and then edit an image in CMYK mode is still a long way down the list of features to be added (if on the list at all). However, there is a plug-in called Separate that offers a partial solution to the problem.

From here
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CMYK_support_in_The_GIMP

Hope that helps Jan

Purchase Photogenics HDR and do the conversion there.

The gimp seperate plugin is available here but it should be considered experimental, and you still have to deal with all of the limitations of the gimp.

You didn't specified GIMP, so try Krita it has native 8 & 16 bit CMYK support.

I don't know about Krita 2, but Krita 1's support of CMYK is basically the same RGB conversion that the GIMP uses to claim CMYK support.  Do they have full support of CMYK in the newer Krita versions or is it still just an RGB conversion?

Funny you asked this now because heathenx just released a video on RGB to CMYK.

http://screencasters.heathenx.org/episode-106/#comments

I haven’t watched the video and I understand this is reversed to what you asked but maybe it will help in some way.

Cheers Jan.
