lol, its an effect i have always wondered how to achieve but never figured out, in trying i have found some other nice things, so i s'pose it all evens out.

If I recall correctly, heathenx did a screencast on something very similar. At least I remember seeing it somewhere. I’ll try to dig it up.

Duplicate the object you want to add a bevel to into a layer of its own, then use dodge and burn along its edges.  Burn creates shadows, dodge creates highlights.  Just keep your exposure low and alternate between shadows midtones and highlights until you get the effect you want.

It can be a painstaking process to get it looking correct, but it provides better results than any of the bevel plugins that I've seen.
