I’m in need of an app that can allow me to design a chicken coop.

I'm not really sure whether i'd want it to be 2 or 3d to be honest.

Initially I'm thinking of copying the design from a tv episode for the rough plan.

One of the managers at a construction outfit I know just uses libreoffice draw to make quick shop drawings. Just set the scale to whatever suits and it is simple to draw witness/dimension lines. Just rough it out and then right-click the objects to accurately define the size. Low learning curve too.

That is interesting, never thought of using that.

I do wonder if I may be better getting the old drawing board out though.

It came up, because it's a constant need in a construction outfit. They do have licenses of autocad, of course, and guys who are trained in using it, but it's waaay overkill and has a very high learning curve for casual use by supers or managers. Back in the day, I thought of sodipodi or inkscape et al., but the easy dimensioning of libreoffice (then openoffice) lent itself best to the problem and they've been using it ever since.

There are a couple of other contenders, but again, the learning curve is too high for casual use. In a somewhat narrower use-case qgis is coming along nicely.

Overkill isn't really an option for myself anyway.
Thanks for the input.

Inkscape has CAD-style dimension arrows though it would seem to me if you took any drafting classes it would be easier to do such manually.

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Extensions-VisualizePath.html#Extensions-Dimensions

The projects I do around the house I can do a height, width, and depth view multiple times faster manually, than doing the same on a computer. Same with the wife when she does embroidery and thinks thing through, instead of using Viking 5D software.

Computers have their place but some shit you can just do better and faster with your brain.

Hi,

you could try QCad (Qt3) or Librecad (Qt4) there are also manuals and
tutorials, just look in internet on there websites.
http://www.qcad.org
http://librecad.org/cms/home.html

Kind regards,
Jan
