 Well,I finally installed it. It's really nice,but I still can't do the lettering styles I want.
I can't change the colors of the letters,but at least they are not as ghastly as what Gimp offers.
 Below is what I'd like to be able to do. The lettering is from something I got on the net,. I drew the rabbit in Gimp with my mouse.

Hey, Goz!

I thought it was kinda funny, the idea of making a rabbit with a mouse.   Seems some genetic manipulation would have to go on there.  Wink

To add text of your choice, you may need to maximize the Inkscape window or stretch it bigger until you can see the A (text tool) at the left side near the bottom of the tools there - right under the paint bucket.  If you click on that, you'll see a little cross-hairs cursor with an "A" next to it.  Use this to place your text then begin typing your text.  You can change the font at any time either by double clicking on the text with the selector tool or by single clicking with the selector tool and clicking on the text tool button again - then at the upper left there's a little drop-down Font menu.  Optionally, you can simply select the text object with a single click and use the "Text and Font" tool at the top of the window.

To change the color of the text, select it and click one of the pretty colors at the bottom of the Inkscape window.    Wink  OR you can create your own custom color in the Fill and Stroke dialog.  That's usually what I do.   Smiley

Gozzin, the type options you have in Inkscape are soooo flexible. First off, what do you mean the lettering is way too small? The font size? That can be set from the toolbar and you can also resize the box with the ctrl key pressed and it'll resize it to a larger font in the process.

With Inkscape, you can kern your individual characters, change the type into paths and use the dynamic path tool to fatten the type, and do all sorts of tricks. It's tremendously powerful.

Hi Goz,

You can do a lot with lettering in Inkscape. Tell us what you're doing and we can help.

Cheers

 Yes,the font size is too small.
I'm trying to write happy birthday next to a drawing I did.

And this is what happened when I saved it;
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<!-- Created with Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) -->

   sodipodi:version="0.32"
   inkscape:version="0.46"
   width="348"
   height="380"
   version="1.0"

   inkscape:output_extension="org.inkscape.output.svg.inkscape">
  <metadata

    <rdf:RDF>
      <cc:Work
 Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh I'll try again.

I don't know.
I saved it the usual way and that's what i got.
Ive opened another copy and am trying again.
Ok,can't change font size cause apply button is grayed out.
Rebooted,made no difference. Angry Angry Angry
Synaptic>Inkscape>uninstall.
 When I get over being angry/frustrated I'll reinstall it again and maybe a fresh install will work,but I'm not holding my breath as I know how consistent software can be..Most lilely it will do the same things again.

If I remember correctly, Freddy had a problem saving in Inkscape. I'm not sure if he sorted that out or not.

What version of Inkscape are you using? What distro are you using? Are you fully updated with all dependencies needed by Inkscape? Any error messages popping up?

You could go to your /home partition and delete the .inkscape directory in case something got messed up there especially if you are reinstalling Inkscape.

We'll figure this out. Don't give up on Inkscape. It's really an awesome program.

Cheers

I didn't even bother to look.  I'm using Cosmosis,which is based off Kbuntu.
I might not have been fully updated. I've got updates this week but did not notice if they were for Inkscape.

I didn't delete it there,I deleted it in Synaptic.
Well,I really do want a way to put nice lettering into pictures like the OOPS piece.
I'm not giving up just yet,but I'm pretty poe'd right now.

The .inkscape directory is for preferences and such. It doesn't remove the program itself.
