Well, I finally figured out how to export an object from Blender, with alpha-transparency.  Grin

 Select the object
Select "file" > "save rendered image" (do not have an opened render window)

Now, you should have a copy of that image, in which ever format you chose, i.e. png, jpg, etc, where ever you save your rendered images to.. be it /home/yourname/Pictures, or so on.
The overall size of the image, will depend on which size rendering area you chose as well, like 1280x1024, 800x600, etc. But the background will be transparent.. and now, you can use that image in any app you want to make a new desktop wallpaper, etc. within Gimp, Inkscape, XaraLX, or what ever your favorite Linux graphics software may be.  Wink

Here is an example of what I am yappin' about  Cheesy

 Hehe... I'm a dope Cheesy

It was not any hidden, secret process at all.

What I finally realized is, when in the "Render" panel, make sure the export options are set to "png" and that RGBA is selected.

Now I just feel silly about the original post but, hopefully this makes up for the mistake  Grin

Heh!  Funny, but in your picture you have the format set to Jpeg, not PNG.   Cheesy Cheesy

Instead of going through a menu just hit "f3" (the hotkey), here is the hotkey list:  http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:Reference/Hotkeys/Map

(This will probably be obsolete when 2.5 is released).

This works really good!  I see all kinds of possibilities with this.  Thanks!
