Hey guys, whatsup?

How often do feel like running linux is keeping you away from alot of the good stuff?

I've been testing windows 7 at home for the past month and a half. I hate to say it but its actually quite good. But dont worry I can easily do a "7 reasons win7 isnt the update its all hyped up to be" article Wink. Havent booted my linux at all in 2 weeks atleast. My boss bought a Spyder3 display calibration thingamajig for work, I borrowed it home. Long story short...awsome! And doesnt work on linux atm atleast. I bought a wacom bamboo fun graphics tablet...really awsome! I use xaraxtreme at work, the license allows me to have it installed at home too...with the bamboo, excellent. I'm not going to mention the bundled PS Elements.

So heres heres the problem. I used to dualboot windows for games only. Now the only reason for me to run linux is websurfing and I dont think thats quite efficient... After 7 years on linux I'm ready to throw in the towel. Or am I? I seem to be having something my boss referred to as 30 year crisis, never heard of that before. Or maybe I'm having a midlife crisis in advance. Freud thought you're constantly in some crisis. I dont know. You tell me.

Don't feel bad Con.. sometimes I feel the same way, when it comes to graphics matters, or looking for really great educational & fun apps for the kids to run... Linux just seems to fail on the edu part completely (as far as competing with 3rd party kids software which runs on Win & Mac) and lags far behind in the graphics industry, as far as tablet support, and so-on.
I still love Linux but, realize that in order to succeed in the graphics industry, one "has to" have knowledge, posses, and use software which is not avail to run on Linux.
All in all, I will never let go of Linux (they'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands  Cheesy) But, alas, I may have to fire up the old xp machine again and, or look at 7  Roll Eyes
But hey, just do like everyone else does in a mid-life crisis... get a red corvette, a girlfriend much young (but of legal age) and get a tattoo, and you should be fine  Grin

Now, many people place the blame on MS for monopolizing the industry (when it comes to all these cool 3rd party software) but, truth is... 1/2 the problem has been the entire "FREE" crusade, which has scared off any and all who might even think ofporting to Linux, to tap a virtually untapped market. Yes, I know.. I always say this but, it is true, and the "one thing: that will always hold Linux down, and right where it is. Wink

Heya Con ...

dont feel bad for having to have a love affair with windoze behind linux's back .... ive been doin it the other way round for a while now ... it seems as long as people pay for something the best developers go that way ... solely coz like everyone they need paying ... have bills ... kids ... spouses ...

to be honest i was crap with windows design apps ... linux apps have brought the artistic side out in me .... i can create more in linux than windoze ... hard to beleive i know ... i find looking at the windoze apps it's all about what plugins or addons can make the job easier to do ... that doesn't help me learn as an artist ...

unlike Gemini i dont work as an artist for a living so i can't say how hard it would be using linux apps for that purpose ... but i certainly would be a challenge for me ... good luck with WIn 7 i have tried it and it does look good ....  getting a better vibe from it than vista ...

Thanks for being understanding Smiley This is just probably a phase that'll go over, maybe a bit like when I was playing computer games 8h/day.

I'd love to do the corvette-mistress-tattoo thing but the wife said no Wink

Your needs have to be met by the tools you use, otherwise you are just being a masochist.

That being said, get the tar and feathers we have a heretic!  Blasphemer!    Shocked Grin Cheesy Cool

Don't worry about it, con.......

We all have to try something new every so often....

I downloaded Win7 and have it in VirtualBox on my desktop computer at home....... it's very pretty, and seems to work well. (I might have more fun with it if I knew a little more about configuration!!!!!)

fear, uncertainty and doubt is the way of ministuff, once you go down it forever will it befuddle you. If you wear your lucky penguin shorts you should have no problem with darth-Bill-IE mind tricks (But, you have to wear them on your head in public!). Not one distro was Bashed in this attack!

I haven't looked into Win7 yet, is there a CD sized download? That DVD thing is quite intimidating. The most positive thing is open source apps that will still run on Win7, I hope. I hear Win7 is good looking. As a techie I will have to investigate so I can be familiar.

Maybe open source could still do the nearly free thing but put well written docs, ref, and support in a book (CD with how-to videos in the back), charge for the book. I would pay for a book.

Hi Conholster,

Neglect Freud, he was an austrian, I live in Austria they are all nuts . . .

That you like Win7 is OK, but why not leave an older PC with Linux?
I like to have both win and lin because they both have strong points and
shortcomings and hardware is cheap nowadays.

In Europe we can have a hackingtosh for not to much money which is
still the better option for graphical stuff, or if you have the money a Mac.

Use what makes you do the job, is the best advise I can give.

I think it's DVD sized, but if you are going to run it in VBox, it's possible to install it from your /home folder and not have to worry about cd's or dvd's..... You might look into that. (My dvd drive is acting up, so I did it that way... pretty slick!)

I have separate HD's for XP & Linux and haven't used the XP one in months!!!  I did recently get a new computer at work (it's got Win7 on it.) I wanted to put Linux on the old one, but being the work computer, I couldn't. So it's Win 7 at work and PCLinuxOS at home.  I like the home computer better!!!  (However, the new work computer runs much faster - the old one was OLD and bogged down with junk, no matter what I did to clean it.)

You use what you need to use......
